In the larger chain stores, flower bulbs are purchased on an impulse basis. A couple of years ago, the tendency of these chains was that they were expanding their programs to more exotic varieties which were traditionally found in the garden centre and mail-order programs. With the pressure on the dollar these more exclusive varieties were becoming too expensive for the chains and they are currently going back to the more standard and cheaper items such as the mixed varieties. The items that sold best in the garden centres and via mail order are:
1. Muscari Armeniacum
2. Tulip Purple Prince
3. Tulip Purple Passion Blend

Also in the mail order and garden centres, the mixed varieties are very popular. But the most popular mixtures are stepping away from the traditional ‘all colour mixtures.’ Within the Simple Pleasures Catalogue, which is sold to the American Garden Centres, a special line has been created. These so called Perfect Partners are exclusive blends, sorted out by garden specialists, and display beautiful combinations of flower bulbs. The first variety showing up in the list of the mail orders is the Muscari armeniacum. This little beauty can bring an ocean of blue flowers in the spring. In second place Purple Prince is very popular in America. Because of it’s simple tulip shape and the sweet purple colour the Purple Prince is very popular in The United States.
